The Drift. Find the position you do not usually sleep in. Close your eyes. We are going to breathe together. In through the nose... hold it at the top... and out, longer than you took it in. Again. In... pause... and out, slower. One more. All the way in... and let it go completely. Now the body, from the top down. Relax your forehead. Unclench the jaw. Let the small muscles behind your eyes go soft. Shoulders down. Hands heavy. All the way through the legs, to the feet. Take your time with that. I will wait. If your attention wanders, that is fine. Come back to the breath. The breath is the anchor. Now a scene. It is short, and we are going to visit it more than once. It is evening. You are standing on the porch of the house you built. The boards are warm. The light is going gold behind the trees. Behind you, through the window, you can hear your family in the kitchen. Someone laughs. Somebody says your name, and asks you to come in. That is the whole scene. Stay inside it for three breaths. Now again, and this time only the sound. The laughing in the kitchen. Your name being said. Listen to it twice through before you move on. Again, and only what you feel. Warm boards under your feet. Cool air arriving off the field. Hold that. Again, and only what you see. Gold light. The doorway. Your own hand on the rail. Once more now. All of it together, exactly as it is. It is done. It already happened. You are simply remembering it. Stay here as long as you like, and let the scene play again on its own. Nothing else is required of you tonight. Sleep from here.

First Light. Sit up. Feet flat on the floor. Your eyes can stay open. Three breaths, and make each one longer going out than coming in. In... and out, slow. In, deeper... and out, slower. Last one. All the way in... and release. Roll the shoulders back once. Let the jaw loosen. Now a scene, and it is a small one. You are at the drafting table. It is early. The light is coming in low across the paper. There is a pencil in your hand and one line already drawn. Nobody needs anything from you yet. The building in front of you does not exist, and by the end of the morning part of it will. Sit in that for two breaths. Again. Only the sound this time. The room is quiet. A pencil is moving on paper. Again. Only the feel. The weight of the pencil. The edge of the table under your forearm. Again. Only what you see. Low light. Clean paper. One good line. Hold that a moment longer. This is the man who ends his day satisfied. He starts here, before anyone has asked him for anything. In a moment you are going to stand up. When you do, go and make one mark on something real. Not the phone. One real mark. Stand up now. Go and take the first line.

The Return. Something is off today. That is all this is. You do not need to fix it. You need to come back. Put down whatever you are holding. Feet flat. Breathe in... and out, twice as long. Again. In... and the long way out. Once more... and let the shoulders drop with it. Now a scene, and it is the simplest one you own. You are walking the ground with no destination. Gravel first, then grass. The creek is off to your right and you hear it before you see it. Something catches your eye, so you sit down and start sketching it. Stay there for a few breaths. Nothing is being solved out here. Nothing is behind. You are looking at one thing closely, which is the oldest skill you have. Again. Only the sound. Water to your right. Wind in the tops of the trees. Again. Only the feel. Uneven ground under you. The pencil. Sun on one side of your face. Stay with that as long as you need. This is what you do on a hard day. You go back to the ground, and you look at one thing closely. Nothing has moved. The ground is there. The people are there. Know what you have. Know where you are. Open your eyes when you are ready, and go do one real thing.
